Thanks for this post, Scott. As a Massachusetts resident it's been fascinating (and cringe-inducing) to watch this race unfold from the perspective of leadership (or lack thereof).

I find the contrast in types of influence that played out particularly interesting - Coakley essentially driving voters away from her (intentionally or not), and Brown drawing them toward him (very intentionally). That's a theme with so many managers and leaders in all kinds of organizations, where it seems their intention is truly one of the most important factors in their ability to influence their teams - because people can almost always sniff out the real motivation behind their managers' actions, just as I think the voters in Massachusetts did in this particular election.

So true, Jessica. Clarity of intention and a clear sense of the outcome you're trying to create are building blocks of effective leadership.

I know it's cliche to talk about vision and leadership together, but this is a topic where it really does apply. Another secret to Brown's success was vision, not necessarily his. Rather, Brown demonstrated to his voters that his vision was similar to a majority of them (or at least a majority of those who got out to vote.)
