What a great tool - sounds like it's been very effective for your client, Scott! Thanks for sharing. Here's an idea to take it to the next level: I wonder if a client could notice a pattern emerge about some people who are NOT getting/taking their fair share of turns to participate and add value. Would clients be interested to try to pull those people into the conversation or direct questions at them more often? How much richer would discussions, and solutions, be if MORE perspectives and ideas were included? Just an idea I've used in my work - hope it generates some interesting reflection! :)

Hi Scott,

What a great technique. I teach active listening as part of one of my communications courses and I think this is a very tangible tool that can really help people become more aware...the first step to changing behavior! Thanks for providing such a robust description of how it works and the outcomes. I'm definitely going to share this in my classes.

Scott,

What a simple but useful way of drawing attention to such an important facet of leadership, particularly for people who are very quantitatively-oriented. Keeping score shows in very clear terms when one is functioning as an "output-device", "input-device" or "I/O device" (as one techie client affectionately termed his modes of participating in meetings)!
